A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
