European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
