Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such medications should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
