Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
